In this day and age people are so quick to judge who is a good mom and which moms just aren’t good enough. One mistake can land a mom in the court of public opinion where there are plenty of people willing to bury her alive. But when the mob dies down you find that she’s just a mom. And it’s those moments when everything isn’t perfect that give the biggest signs that you are a great mom.
The truth is we are imperfect people raising tiny imperfect people.
No matter how flawless your parenting skills are accidents happen.
Those are the moments that make a mom a great mom.
Those moments when the world seems like it is standing still, but rushing forward all at the same time.
Those moments when you would gladly take the place of your child, but know that you can’t.
Signs that You Are a Great Mom
Even when it doesn’t feel like you are…
You have a magical hug that can take away any pain, any case of the blues, and make a child forget all of her problems.
Your kiss can heal a skinned knee better than antibacterial ointment and a waterproof bandaid.
You are the one your child cries for when she’s had a terrible accident and needs stitches or a cast.
Your lap is the perfect place for talking about dreams and plans for the future.
You are the biggest, loudest, proudest cheerleader your child has for every mountain your child climbs.
You have a cuddle ready at 2am that is able to stop storms, rid bedrooms of monsters and cure all bad dreams.
You are the best book reader. Even if it’s only one book. 10 times a day.
You know the perfect way to cut a sandwich. And an apple. And a grape.
You buy your child new shoes when she needs them, even though your own shoes have holes in them.
Your child knows that even when she makes a mistake, she can call and you’ll be there to show her mercy and grace.
You will give your child the last of the ramen noodles, knowing there is nothing for you to eat.
You stand by your sick child’s bed, offering them one more hug, one more smile, one more laugh.
You are a great mom.
You see, being a great mom isn’t about making cute meals, the best crafts, signing kids up for the most coveted extra-curricular activities.
It’s not even about having a perfect schedule, teaching kids how to do their chores, or sending them to the perfect summer camp.
Being a great mom is about loving kids.
My kids. Your kids.
Without these tiny imperfect people we have no future.
And without imperfect mothers, this world would be a much darker, scarier place.
Thank you for scaring the monsters away.
Thank you for kissing the boo boos.
Thank you for being a great mom!
