I love quick and easy desserts that seem like they were more work than they were! This Easy Chocolate Mousse takes out the technical aspects of a traditional mousse recipe, making it an easy no-bake dessert option that kids can help make!
Traditionally, a chocolate mousse requires several tricky baking techniques, including making a meringue and emulsifying chocolate with water (no easy task). This Easy Chocolate Mousse simply requires heating some cream and whisking an egg, making it the perfect fancy dessert for the time-pressed or under-confident chef. My 4 year old actually did all steps of this recipe, except for heating and pouring the cream for safety concerns.
This chocolate mousse is just as velvety and delicious as a traditionally made mousse, so your guests will never know the difference! A luxurious and chocolate-rich dessert with minimal effort.
How to Make this Easy Chocolate Mousse Recipe
Ingredients for Easy Chocolate Mousse:
- 1 cup chocolate chips or squares
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup whipping cream (35%) – not whipped cream
- Garnish like sprinkles, strawberries, whipped cream, optional
Then gather your equipment:
- 1 large bowl
- 1 small saucepan
- Mixer (hand or stand)
- Candy thermometer, optional
Whisk the egg in a large bowl for about a minute until it is frothy and light – almost bubbly and white in colour.
Add the chocolate chips and vanilla extract to the bowl and set aside.
Heat the whipping cream in a small saucepan over medium-low heat, but do not boil. You want it hot but not bubbling – so about 5 minutes. I also do not stir any milk or cream when heating as it can cause the texture to become almost curdled-looking in appearance after incorporated into the final dish. (This is true for yogurt, as well.)
(If you’d like, you can use a candy thermometer until the cream reaches 190F)
Pour the cream over the chocolate-egg mixture and mix on medium speed until completely blended, about 2 minutes. This also serves to aerate your mousse so don’t skimp on the mixing!
Pour the chocolate mixture into serving dishes and refrigerate overnight until set. (If you’re in a pinch, 4-6 hours will do – but the flavor is better overnight.)
Garnish just before serving.
