My oldest daughter turned 13 yesterday. My how the time has flown by! And before I know it she’ll be out trying to face the world on her own. But before she does, I have a few more things to say. A few more things to solidify within her heart. I want her to be great. I know she can be. She is capable of doing amazing things, but often gets lost in her own self doubt. So, these few, brief moments I have I want to encourage her to be great. More than anything, I want her to know what greatness really is. Dear daughter, this is what will make you great:
Sweet, tender, amazing daughter, you are a natural leader. I have never actually seen you be a follower in your life.
You’ve always been in charge on the playground.
You are always in charge of the game and activities with the little kids in the neighborhood.
You’re the default babysitter.
You always know what’s right.
In fact, you know everything. In your mind.
But my dear girl, you have yet to learn what true leadership is. What truly makes a person great.
I need you to know true greatness is not based on your physique, your talents, or even how much money is in your bank account.
True greatness isn’t the number of followers you have on Instagram, how many likes you can get on Facebook, or how big your YouTube channel is.
True greatness is when you lay all your hopes, dreams, plans and ambitions aside for a Greater plan. His plan.
I want you to be great.
What will make you great:
Do everything with excellence.
Try new things.
Always lift up others above yourself.
Work hard. Be willing to do tough things.
Be a servant to all. Ready to serve in whatever need is presented to you.
Have great character. Don’t put on a mask for people. Be great when people are looking and when no one sees.
Be humble. Your talents and skills will make room for themselves.
Don’t give up.
It’s okay to make mistakes. Lots of mistakes. As long as you try again.
Always admit when you are wrong.
See things from another point of view.
Pay attention to the little details. Don’t get lost in the big things.
When you are broken, fill in the missing pieces with something better than your biggest imaginations.
When you cry, don’t hide it. You will find strength in your tears.
As you become “you”, don’t look at the media or others to tell you who you should be. Look to Him.
These words won’t mean a lot to you right now. I know that. I was a teenager once…
But I’m going to keep telling you anyway.
One day, I hope that these words will become your inner voice and you will start to realize what will make you truly great.
